FAQ

Here are some of the Frequently Asked Questions that we get about the audition process.

If you still have questions after looking through this page, don't hesitate to email us!

01

Where can I sign up?

The easiest and best way to sign up is through our online sign-ups here. You’ll find a list of all our audition times and a few questions to finalize the sign-up.

02

Do I need experience?

While it's not required that you have past musical experience, it definitely helps to have certain skills walking in, such as how to blend with a section, how to read music, etc. Don’t discount yourself if you have less experience than others!

03

Do I need to know how to read music?

As mentioned, while it definitely helps, we do not require our members to be able to read music, and make special efforts toward those who learn music through hearing. During auditions, while music reading ability is something to take into consideration, singing ability and a love for Christ mean so much more to us overall :D.

04

Can I bring a tape to accompany my solo?

If you feel that you need a tape to accompany you during your solo, we do allow it. However, expect that we may ask to hear you without your recording as well, simply to hear your voice from a different perspective.

05

What song should I sing?

Think carefully when choosing a song to sing for us. Try to pick something you would expect us to know, as well as something that will be able to show off your range, tone, flexibility, etc. Also look for something that you’re going to have fun with though! Pick one that will truly show us who you are and what you like!

One request we do have however is to avoid singing rap or opera songs. While these are legitimate genres of music, they don’t tell us much about your voice in terms of how it would fit within our a cappella group. If you have a question about your song choice, email us! Also, if we don’t think your song choice is enough for us to hear of your voice at the audition or most of us don’t know it, we may ask you to sing another song that would be better suited for us to hear you.

06

What are callbacks? When will I find out whether or not I made it?

Callbacks are usually held the week after our initial auditions, though the specific dates will be posted on the website under “Auditions” as auditions draw near.

07

I have an audition conflict? What do I do?

First look for an alternate time, we have multiple days for auditions to be held. Check if another time works for you. If absolutely none of them work for you, contact us asap. We will try to do what we can to accommodate your audition, within reason of course.

08

How many people are you taking? What are the chance of me getting in?

We take a different number of people from year-to-year, depending on who left the group the year before, and how many we want to end up with. Don’t think in terms of chances at all though! Come audition for us, try your hardest, and show us what you’ve got. There’s no chance of you getting in if you don’t try, so why not give it a shot?

09

If I make it into the group, what is the time commitment I should expect to devote to RtD?

Our group  holds two rehearsals a week, plus sectionals (vary per week). The rehearsals are 2 hours each, and are generally on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Also, we do have gigs, which are completely unpredictable for the most part. However, while we expect you to be at most events, we do give leeway for sickness or other legitimate reasons to miss something.

To end on an important note however, committing to RtD does mean it is a commitment, and we do expect our members to put their best effort toward all aspects of the group, whether time or otherwise.

10

What if I just don't known my schedule? What should I do?

Talk to us. We’re totally willing to listen to what you have to say, especially if it pertains to your ability to be part of the group. Don’t let your confusion about schedule keep you from auditioning!
